progesterone sadly causing depressing for me
Post Content
Hello dear people, I can hardly believe how much it seems progesterone gets me down. (typo, depression ofc, sorry) Background: I started HRT three years ago, had to try several approaches. I had immense anxiety and insomnia, hot flashes, joint pain and a few other issues. Had a hysterectomy about 10 years ago leaving ovaries and cervix in. At first, HRT didn’t improve things at all - I had estradiol gel and progesterone daily. I had to add a high dose antidepressant to get by. Tried changing dose, didn’t seem to do much. After a while, I read here that progesterone can make some women depressed and I remembered that I always was very moody before my period. And during pregnancy, I was a mess psychologically, I was jittery and worried about every little thing. So I tried the progesterone vaginally. Didn’t improve things a lot, but a little. It is very hard to find out if something affects mood when you are already deep in depression and anxiety because mood isn’t the exact same 24/7 anyway. A big change came when I tried not taking progesterone at all. I stuck with the estradiol gel. Things were better but sleep was still not good. Sometimes. Again, this doesn’t seem to follow rules. My gyn is a big fan of “being as natural as possible“ and he thinks all women should take progesterone cyclically btw. After a year of estrogen only, I had a time of particularly bad insomnia again and I thought “well progesterone helps sleep, I can try again”. It does help sleep, I could sleep better, but after four days, I was really depressed and now the anxiety is rising, too! It is not likely this was caused by anything but the progesteron. I am really floored how much influence this has on me and it is honestly a bit scary that my hormones more or less cancel out all therapy, spirituality, meditation and even the low dose antidepressant. Of course those help cope better but now it seems very clear that progesterone = depression and anxiety for me. Well I just wanted to share my experience since a minority of women seems to react the same way. I was never certain it is really the progesterone but this time it is really clear. It is a shame because I would love the improved sleep but not at this cost. i will look into alternatives and stay with estrogen only.
