Uterine Biopsy experience
Post Content
I know many of us at some point consider an ablation - a procedure which requires a uterine biopsy beforehand. The accounts of them online are mostly utterly horrid and report brutal pain. I want to share my experience from today and hopefully give you some hope. First, my OBGYN does ablations in-office, and that was a no go for me. I asked for and got recommendations from my town’s Facebook page for several different doctors. I ended up asking my primary to refer me to a DO in a women’s clinic. With a referral I was able to be seen within a week. At the appointment the Dr confirmed that she does ablations in the operating room with general anesthesia, but the uterine biopsy in office. She was actually ready to do it right there and I was already stripped but I asked what about pain control? She said she will prescribe me several medications and do it on a different visit. She prescribed toradol to help with cramping, Oxycodone-acetaminophen combo for pain, and diazepam for nerves and asked me to have a driver. Today, I took all meds 45 minutes before and my husband drive me to the appointment. Here’s the thing - that combo didn’t to make me loopy or sedated at all. I was full of energy and kind of nervous it was not working. Ended up joking with my husband a lot to ease the nerves. In the room, I held my husbands fingers for dear life. She started by applying iodine solution to my cervix and then did a solid lidocaine nerve block on my cervix. That felt like sharp menstrual cramping, very briefly. She then started to get to open my cervix. Turns out I have a tight back of the cervix and that required a dilator. This was the longest part. Felt like strong period cramps and I breathed through them but kept blabbering away to keep myself distracted. The Dr kept asking if I was doing okay. I was. The actual tissue retrieval was the quickest, like few seconds and again felt like a cramp. And it was done. I’m sure the meds helped. Now I was anxious and my knees were shaking by the end, and at some point I recall singing “I’m almost there” from princess and the frog. When it was done my husband helped me dress up and we went to buy chocolates. I have no pain as of yet, just some mild bleeding. My cervix is swollen though. My ablation is scheduled mid-March. Overall, very manageable and I am very happy with this doctor. During the procedure I told her I was on HRT and she was fully on board, said media really scared many women some years ago and it is bad. I think I’m switching to her as my female doctor. So. There’s hope. Keep searching for good doctors. I survived uterine biopsy practically unscathed.
